The Different Types of Massage
The most common reason why we want to get a massage is because we all crave for something that will soothe and give us relief from some specific type of discomfort. Historically speaking, massage as a form of therapy and treatment has been around for thousands of years now and in all those years, many different forms and variants have emerged.
The traditional way a massage is performed entails that several levels of movement and pressure will be applied to the body, or more particularly its soft tissues like in the skin, ligaments, fascia, tendons, and muscles. Although there perhaps are more than a hundred different types of massage, there’s no denying that only a few are universally recognized and practiced in literally all four corners of the world. So this article is basically about those most popular and common types of massage you probably already have heard.
1 – Swedish massage
This right here deserves to be mentioned first. This massage type is widely used in many countries all around the world because of its inherent effectiveness in improving the blood flow to the skin and muscles. Accordingly, the tension in the muscles is effectively removed.
2 – Massage for sports and fitness
This massage, as the term implies, is used primarily for fitness enthusiasts as well as athletes. Its distinctiveness lies in the fact that it is more dynamic and forceful when compared to other forms of massage. The original purpose of this body massage is to provide warm up to the muscle tissues, which athletes need; but overtime, it has become quite a valuable help in training as well as the prevention and/or treatment of an injury.
3 – Reflexology
The reason why reflexology isn’t as familiar as the first two is because it is relatively new. It is based on the logic that every organ in the body is mapped to the feet and hands. The idea behind it is that through the application of finger pressure and stretching on the pressure points located on the foot, the organs of the body are aided for them to function normally.
4 – Shiatsu massage
This Japanese bodywork is rapidly gaining popularity in the West due to its similarity to the old Chinese practice of acupuncture. Shiatsu says that the body is composed of interconnected energy pathways that are susceptible to energy flow blockages, which in turn could lead to imbalances in how energy is being distributed in the body. The result of this imbalance comes in the form of tension, weakness, and pain. With the expert hands of a shiatsu practitioner, the combination of pressure and stretching directed on the key points of the body will correspond to the restoration of the natural energy flow of the body, thereby giving relief against pain, weakness, and tension.
